Information for Presenters

Preparing for a successful conference

Please note that all authors, presenters, panelists, etc. must register for the conference in order to participate. The formal deadline for registration was Sunday, May 16th, but presenters can still take advantage of "early bird" rates through the end of May.  We encourage you to register for the full conference (June 16-20)!

Most of your questions should be answered below. If you still have questions, please email workshops [at] justmetropolis.org.

General information:

Photocopies, printing, fax services, etc. will NOT be provided by the conference. Such services are available nearby should you need them.

Doing a paper or project presentation?

  • Paper/project presentations are grouped together into "paper sessions" lasting 1.5 hours. The schedule of classroom sessions is posted for download here.
  • For most paper sessions with at least 4 presentations, each individual presentation should last no more than 15 minutes, to allow for introductions at the start, and 2-3 minutes of Q&A following each presentation.
  • You are responsible for bringing a laptop, but there are a limited number available for loan. Additionally, fellow presenters may have laptops. Let us know if you cannot bring a laptop and need one to present.
  • If you need to contact the other members of your paper session, before the conference, send an email to workshops [at] justmetropolis.org.
  • You are responsible for bringing your presentation on a flash drive in a universally-accepted format. i.e. PDF.
  • All classrooms will be equipped with an overhead projector and screen.
  • Most classrooms have chalk or dry-erase boards. Let us know if you need one.
  • Limited WiFi will be available for conference participants, although exclusively web-based presentations are risky as service is not guaranteed.

Participating in a panel discussion?

Leading a participatory workshop?

  • Workshops will be 1.5 hours, unless otherwise noted, and will take place in classroom-sized rooms, unless special arrangements are made. The schedule of classroom sessions is posted for download here.
  • “Presenting” by the workshop leader/s should be limited. The goal of a participatory workshop is the involvement of ALL workshop participants in a discussion or other exercise designed to learn, communicate, debate, etc.
  • If you haven't already, please let us know if your workshop will require any special arrangements for space, scheduling, etc.

Presenting a poster, model or display?

  • The posters, models, etc. will be on display at UC Berkeley during BOTH classroom workshop days: Friday June 18th and Saturday June 19th.  The poster reception will take place during the 1.5-hour lunch session on Friday afternoon, during which time you are expected to stay near your work and be available to answer questions.
  • Poster presenters will have access to the building on Thursday, June 17th during the day, or between 7:30a.m. and 9:00a.m. on Friday the 18th to set up. You are responsible for ensuring that your poster is properly displayed by 9:00am on the 18th.
  • Wurster Hall has plywood walls designed for display. A limited amount of tacks may be available, but the responsibility for mounting supplies lies with you. A limited number of tables are also available for three-dimensional displays.
  • Please plan to take down your display after 1pm on Saturday, June 19th.
