Ajami, the Arab section of Jaffa, Israel, and previously a slum scheduled for demolition, has quickly become a hot spot real estate alternative to Israel's metropolis Tel Aviv next door. While many poverty stricken Arab families have lived on these properties for decades, many of these properties were declared abandoned during the 1948 war that established the Jewish state and are now state owned "Absentee Ownership" public housing, thus giving post-1948 residents no legal ownership rights. A current resident and activist puts it bluntly, "These people are living in shacks with million-dollar beach views."
